Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect in pulsed magnetic fields

Pulsed magnetic fields appear to be a perfect tool for direct measurement of the magnetocaloric effect. Relatively short pulse duration favors the adiabatic conditions and resembles the cycling times of possible magnetocaloric devices. We report on systematic investigation of the magnetocaloric effect in three different classes of magnetocaloric materials. Gd, being a benchmark magnetocaloric material, shows the maximum effect of about 60 K in magnetic field of 70 Tesla. Huesler alloy Ni50Mn35In15 shows inverse magnetocaloric effect at the martensitic transition, and conventional effect at the Curie point. La(Fe,Co,Si)13 allows for tuning the nature of the ordering transition from first - to second order. Although the magnetocaloric effect of first - and second - order compounds significantly differ at low fields, the maximum effect reaches a similar value of about 16 K.
