Origin of the elements

Understanding the origin of the elements possess severe challenges to our current view of the universe, in particular those elements heavier than iron, which have long been associated with explosive cosmic events. In my presentation I will revisit the current basic understanding of selected nuclear physics aspects related with the formation of the elements and then will further connect to certain explosive astrophysical phenomena that are currently considered as the potential sites for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, namely the merger of two neutron stars and massive star explosions.
