Heusler compounds are a large group of intermetallic compositions with versatile physical properties which include half-metallic ferromagnetism, compensated ferrimagnetism, magnetic shape memory effect, Kondo behaviour, large thermo-electric effect, unconventional superconductivity. In recent times, they have gained renewed importance for their practical applications in the field of spintronics. Interestingly, their physical properties can be easily tuned by varying the valence electron concentration through proper doping and substitution. Empirical laws concerning the valence electron concentration, such as Slater–Pauling rule are found to be useful in predicting their electronic, magnetic and structural properties quite accurately. In my PhD research work, I have worked extensively on Heusler based compositions which show multifaceted physical properties. The presentation is aimed to provide a comprehensive view of the interesting magnetic and transport properties observed in some of the binary, ternary as well as quaternary transition metal and rare-earth-based bulk Heusler compositions. The main emphasis is given on magnetization, resistivity, magnetoresistance, Hall effect and thermopower studies.
