Abstract:
The physical properties of actinide oxides are of large technological and safety interest for nuclear power and non-power applications. In addition, these materials are also remarkable for their fundamental properties, exhibiting dipolar magnetic order but also “hidden” order parameters. The current presentation will focus on this second aspect.
After an introduction on the specific constraints linked to experiments on transuranium materials and our facilities in Karlsruhe, I will review the magnetic properties of actinide dioxides from thorium to curium and present our investigations of mixed oxides involving thorium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium and americium, contributing to build a continuous picture of this system.
