Quantum Engineering by Nanostructured Materials and Application Examples
prof. J.P. Reithmaier
University of Kassel, Niemcy
The quality of nanostructured semiconductors based on self-organized quantum dots has strongly improved within the last few years, which allow now a much higher degree of control of the quantum physical properties. The impact in different application directions will be discussed, such as 1.55 µm single photon emitters for fiber based quantum key distribution as well as in high-performance laser diodes and amplifiers. A complementary material system for quantum technological applications are color centers in diamond. Here nearly identical atomic quantum systems are embedded in a solid-state material. However, the challenges in fabrication and nanostructuring are much higher than in semiconductors. Nanostructuring technologies in diamond, such as nanopillar and photonic crystal membrane structures as well as local sensors based on NV-centers integrated in diamond cantilever tips will be discussed.
