Exciton-polaritons, new quasi-particles emerging from strongly coupled photons and excitons in a semiconductor microcavity structure, form a novel class of dissipative bosonic condensates. Dispite their strongly nonequilibrium nature, due to extremely short lifetime, polariton condensates show a variety of collective phenomena analogous to the well-known atomic condensates. In this talk I will give a brief introduction into the field of dissipative bosonic condensates and the current state of the art. Fundamental properties of polariton condensates will be presented and new approaches in the lattice engineering of the cavities to produce analogs of optical lattices will be presented. The main part of the talk will be focused on the collective excitations of a polariton condensate, also known as Bogoliubov excitations. Recent experimental findings in Wroclaw University of Technology will be discussed in details and an outlook of future experiments will be presented.
