Multiphase Organic Molecular Systems for Nonlinear Optics, Sensing and Light Amplification

Prof. Jarosław Myśliwiec

Soft Matter Optics Group, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland

Organic molecular systems offer unique opportunities for tailoring light–matter interactions through molecular design, self-organization, and control of the local environment. In particular, multiphase materials combining organic chromophores, polymers, liquid crystals, and molecular aggregates provide versatile platforms for exploring nonlinear optical phenomena, environment-sensitive emission, and optical gain.

In this seminar, I will present selected results of our research on the photophysical properties of organic molecular systems, with particular emphasis on the relationship between molecular structure, material organization, and optical response. Special attention will be given to donor-π-acceptor chromophores exhibiting intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), and aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE). Their sensitivity to the surrounding environment offers opportunities for optical sensing, while their nonlinear optical properties provide additional mechanisms for controlling light-matter interactions.

The second part of the presentation will focus on stimulated emission and laser action in organic materials, including amplified spontaneous emission, random lasing, and distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers. I will demonstrate how molecular organization, optical scattering, and resonant feedback can be exploited to achieve wavelength tunability, real-time emission control, and multicolor lasing. Particular examples will include liquid-crystalline systems, phase-separated hybrid materials, and organic microresonators, with special attention to the generation of white laser light.

The presented results highlight the potential of multifunctional organic materials for integrating nonlinear optical response, environmental sensitivity, and tunable coherent light generation within a single photonic platform [1-5].
