Quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits Technology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology: Today and Future Perspectives

Dr hab. inż. Marcin Syperek

WPPT, Politechnika Wrocławska

In this seminar, I will present recent advances in quantum photonic integrated circuit (QPIC) technologies developed at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. I will highlight our existing capabilities, key achievements, and future research directions. I will focus on quantum photonic devices operating in the telecommunications C-band near 1550 nm, where compatibility with existing optical-fiber infrastructure creates meaningful opportunities for quantum communications and information processing.

The central focus will be developing efficient, scalable single-photon sources based on self-assembled InAs/InP semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), as well as their integration with optical microcavities and photonic integrated circuits. I will discuss technological challenges and recent progress in controlling QD density and emission wavelength during epitaxial growth, engineering photon extraction using metallic reflectors and distributed Bragg reflector structures, and designing photonic cavities for both out-of-plane and in-plane photon collection. I will place particular emphasis on electrically controlling QD emission wavelength and charge state, as well as deterministic QD–cavity coupling enabled by hyperspectral imaging and precise nanofabrication.

The seminar will also address our progress in hybrid integration of cavity-coupled QD devices with SiN and SiO₂/Si photonic architectures using chip-transfer techniques. I will highlight how our research integrates foundry-compatible photonic circuit design, metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, advanced nanofabrication, near-infrared optical microscopy, numerical modeling, and both linear and quantum optical characterization.

Finally, I will outline future perspectives for developing scalable quantum photonic integrated circuits. This includes electrically adjustable quantum light sources, enhanced photon indistinguishability, and integrating multiple quantum emitters into complex photonic architectures. These developments aim to establish a versatile technological platform for quantum communication, photonic quantum information processing, and future quantum infrastructures.
