In recent years, much attention has been paid to the investigation of electronic systems with unconventional features, for instance, heavy fermion properties, non fermi-liquid behaviour, unconentional superconductivity…etc. The origin of anomalous metallic phenomena is believed to be due to strong electron correlations in narrow conduction bands. To explain these unusual properties, physicists need to go beyond the conventional picture, beyond the standard Fermi liquid theory. However, in the strongly correlated electron systems (SCES), there exist rather interacting low-energy excitations, and therefore, in order to identify and understand more these exotic states of materials we will require low-temperatures, high-magnetic fields, and high-pressures.The Depatment of Magnetic Research, ILT&SR, has been equipped with an apparatus, which is able to measure electrical resistivity under pressure up to 20 GPa in the temperature range 2 - 300 K. Together with the data obtained at low temperatures (down to 0.3 K) and high magnetic fields (up to 9 T), applying hydrostatic pressure (up to 20 GPa) should help to elucidate the electronic behavior of many SCES.
The tast of PhD student will carry out pressure experiments to look for response of electrical resistivity of SCES to applied pressure.
