Prof. Tadeusz Kopeć

Prof. Tadeusz K. Kopeć is a theoretical physicist specializing in condensed matter physics, particularly in the theory of quantum phase transitions, disordered systems, and Bose–Einstein condensation in optical lattices.

He completed his physics studies at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (1977–1982). In 1987 he defended his PhD thesis on phase transitions in ferromagnetic superconductors, and in 1994 he obtained his habilitation degree based on a series of works devoted to quantum spin glasses. He was awarded the title of Professor of Physical Sciences in 2005.

His research interests include layered and granular superconducting structures with Josephson coupling, high‑temperature superconductors, quantum dissipation phenomena, and topological excitations in strongly correlated systems. More recently, his work has focused on the interplay between topological excitations and quantum critical points, as well as phase transitions in ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices.

Prof. Kopeć is the author or co‑author of approximately 200 scientific publications, including numerous papers in Physical Review Letters, Physical Review B, and Physical Review A. He has supervised four PhD students, two of whom later obtained habilitation.

He has completed several international research stays, including at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center (IAEA fellowship, 1983–1984), the University of Duisburg (1990–1991), the research group of Prof. Hiroomi Umezawa at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (1992), and as a Fulbright Fellow at Northeastern University in Boston (1994–1995). Between 1993 and 2000 he collaborated regularly with the group of Prof. Paul Erdos at the University of Lausanne.

For his scientific achievements, he received the Award of the Scientific Secretary of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has led numerous research projects funded by KBN and NCN. From 1997 to 2003 he headed the Department of Superconductivity and Superfluidity Theory, and subsequently the Division of Condensed Matter Theory at INTiBS PAN. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Institute’s Scientific Council.

From 2012 to 2018 he simultaneously held a position at the University of Wrocław as an associate professor in the Institute of Theoretical Physics, where he taught courses and seminars in statistical physics, phase transitions, and modern condensed matter physics.
