KEYWORDS: high-pressure X-ray diffraction, phase transitions, clathrates and coordination polymers.

DESCRIPTION:

Director of the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, PAS announces a competition for the position of assistant professor (in Polish: adiunkt) in the Division of Structure Research.

Research task: Polymorphism and mechanisms of structural phase transitions in new functional materials.

Responsibilities for the position include:

  • Synthesis of Hofmann-type clathrates and coordination polymers.
  • Implementation of high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements using a four-circle single-crystal diffractometer.
  • High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies of inorganic–organic compounds in a diamond anvil cell (DAC).
  • X-ray diffraction measurements on single crystals and powder samples over a wide temperature range.
  • Structural analysis based on single-crystal and powder diffraction data; solving structures of polymorphic phases.
  • Analysis of phase transitions based on structural data; correlation of physicochemical properties with crystal structure.
  • Preparation of research reports, deposition of structures in crystallographic databases, preparation of scientific publications, and presentation of research results at national and international scientific conferences.
  • Acquisition of external research funding, including preparation of research proposals for the National Science Centre (NCN) competitions.
  • Co-organization of scientific conferences and science outreach events.
  • Supervision of interns and doctoral students undertaking internships at the OBS.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree in chemical sciences obtained within the last 12 years from the announcement of the competition.
  • Experience in the synthesis of coordination polymers.
  • Experience in high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements using a DAC.
  • Experience in crystal structure determination and in analyzing structural mechanisms of phase transitions.
  • Documented scientific achievements covering the above topics, confirmed by authorship or co-authorship of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Experience in managing a research task or project.
  • Fluent command of English.
  • Ability to work in a team and good communication skills.
  • Additional advantage will be experience in diffraction measurements at synchrotron facilities, documented by the successful acquisition of beam time for research purposes.

List of documents required from the candidate:

  1. A diploma or a copy of the diploma in English or Polish (if in another language, an English translation must also be attached) confirming completion of the doctoral degree. If the diploma was obtained abroad, the candidate will be required to provide a legalised or apostilled original of the diploma before starting employment at the Institute (otherwise it will not be possible to conclude an employment contract). In the case of a degree obtained abroad which is not recognised in Poland on the basis of international agreements, the candidate will apply to the Institute for its nostrification. Information on nostrification can be found at the following link: https://nawa.gov.pl/uznawalnosc/informacje-dla-uczelni/nostryfikacja-stopni-naukowych
