Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, Polish Academy of Sciences (INTiBS) is implementing NCN PRELUDIUM BIS project "Influence of gauge potentials and topology on phase transitions of bosons in optical lattice", no. 2020/39/O/ST3/01148. The Institute is conducting a competition for a scholarship holder/doctoral student within the recruitment process to the Wrocław Doctoral School of Institutes of Polish Academy of Sciences (WSD IPAN).

Description of the research project

The research and dissertation will be carried out within the framework of the research project: “Influence of gauge potentials and topology on phase transitions of bosons in optical lattice " (No 2020/39/O/ST3/01148) carried out under the contract awarded by the National Science Center.

The aim of the project is to theoretically study the properties of strongly interacting ultra-cold bosons in optical lattices. Such systems, intensively studied in recent years experimentally, mimic the behavior of strongly correlated electrons in the solid body, while allowing a very wide range of control properties of particles in a model environment. As a result, they are very helpful in giving insight into the quantum phenomena of multibody solid state physics, which in their case are not disturbed by lattice defects, disorder or strong thermal fluctuations.

The areas of interest will include investigation of quasiparticle excitations in bands with trivial and non-trivial topology, transport properties in lattices with restricted geometry, in presence of gauge potentials, analysis of role of dissipation in creation and nature of ordered states.

Scholarship

A doctoral student will receive a doctoral scholarship from the funds of the National Science Centre on the basis of the Act of 20 July 2018. Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, as amended) and on the basis of the Regulations for the allocation of funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Centre in the field of research projects.

The PRELUDIUM BIS doctoral scholarship will be paid in the monthly amount of:

  • 5000 PLN (the amount including full costs of social security contributions, etc.) until the month in which the doctoral student's mid-term evaluation at the doctoral school was conducted,
  • 6000 PLN (the amount including full costs of social insurance contributions, etc.) after the month in which the student's mid-term evaluation at doctoral school was conducted.

The doctoral scholarship will be paid after deduction of all components, in accordance with the applicable regulations. In particular, the funds allocated for the doctoral scholarship by the established regulations will cover the costs of compulsory social insurance and - upon request - the costs of sickness insurance.

Legal basis for recruitment

Recruitment to the project will be conducted in parallel with the recruitment to the WSD IPAN.

The recruitment process, as a result of which the candidate will be able to be accepted to the PhD school, will be conducted by the Recruitment Committee for the WSD IPAN in accordance with the Rules of Recruitment to the Wroclaw Doctoral School of Institutes of Polish Academy of Sciences.

At the same time, the documentation submitted by the candidates will be evaluated by an additional selection committee appointed by the Head of the Institute and chaired by the Project Manager. Detailed criteria and the way of evaluating the Candidates by the project commission is described in the current Regulations for granting funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the scope of research projects, adopted by the resolution of the Council of the National Science Center No. 21/2021 of March 5, 2021.

Requirements to be met by the Candidate

The applicant must meet the WSD IPAN recruitment requirements. Also, additional conditions must be met for participation in the project:

  • Only a person who does not hold a Ph.D. degree and who is not a participant in a doctoral school may enter the competition,
  • The candidate should have scientific interests in the area of theoretical physics, as well as predispositions to perform the tasks within the project. Preference will also be given to candidates with documented academic achievements.

Joining the competition

Candidates wishing to apply should join the WSD IPAN recruitment and indicate their interest in pursuing the project topic. Candidates should ensure that documentation submitted for recruitment includes:

  • information about their competence to perform specific tasks in the research project,
  • description of their scientific achievements, in particular a list of publications in reputable publishing houses.

The above information can be additionally sent to the project manager (Tomasz Zaleski, Ph.D., e-mail: , tel. 71 395 4316) until the day of the interviews to the WSD IPAN.
