Magnetoelectric effect, magnetostriction, and the magnetic moment in piezoelectric paramagnetic NiSO4⋅6H2O and CeCuCl3 (in a paramagnetic and in an antiferromagnetic state) is comprehensively studied over a wide temperature range in a magnetic fields up to 14 T for several magnetic field directions with respect to the crystallographic axes.
In order to explain the magnetoelectric effect, simple contribution of the magnetostriction induced piezoelectric effect is considered. It is shown that the piezoelectric effect may be neglected in the case of the NiSO4⋅6H2O single crystal, especially at the liquid Helium temperature, where the magnetoelectric effect is large. However, in the case of CeCuCl3 the relative contribution of the piezoelectric effect is comparable with the observed magnetoelectric effect but has an opposite sign. As a consequence, magnetoelectric effect change the sign around temperature of 50K.
