The Wrocław Doctoral School of Institutes of Polish Academy of Sciences announces a special recruitment for a PhD student scholarship in a research project entitledTheoretical and Experimental Development of Bi/Sb based Perovskites for Optoelectronic Applications’ funded by Polish National Science Center (grant No. 2021/43/B/ST5/01172), and carried out in the Structure Research Department of ILT&SR PAS in Wrocław. We offer work in a resilient and friendly team dealing with the broadly understood structural characteristics of new functional materials.

I. Description of the research project

The main goal of the project is the synthesis of new organic-inorganic hybrids based on metal halides (Sb(III) and Bi(III)) with small organic cations that exhibit polar properties and efficient absorption of light in the visible range; examination of the crystal structure, phase stability, dielectric, optical and spectroscopic properties in a wide range of temperatures. The new materials can be used in the fields of modern physics, in particular as absorbers to improve the efficiency of thin-film solar cells, LEDs or photodetectors. DFT calculations and measurement of transport properties will be performed for the most promising connections. As part of the project, we also intend to manufacture semiconductor quantum dots, conduct their physico-chemical characteristics and produce thin layers using the spin-coating method in order to test their stability and photoconductivity. New, fully characterized materials of potential technological importance will be created. Knowledge about the influence of the dynamics and polar order of the organic part on the transport and optical properties, which are determined by the structure of polyanionic (inorganic) structures, will be expanded. The influence of modification of both the anionic subnetwork dimensionality and composition on the size of the band gap will be established

II. Additional information

The total fellowship of PLN 5,000 (the amount will be reduced by the cost of mandatory social security contributions, etc., about 24%)1.

III. Duties and obligations:                                                                                                                 

  • synthesis of organic-inorganic metal-halides in a form of single-crystals
  • synthesis of organic-inorganic quantum dots,
  • production of thin-films using spin-coating method,
  • measurements of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder XRD, at wide range of temperatures and pressure,
  • solving and refining the crystal structures, performing a phase analysis from PXRD,
  • measurements of the Raman spectra
  • data analysis, writing reports and publications,
  • collaboration within a project team, participation in scientific conferences and workshops,
  • following rules and recruitment procedures of Wrocław Doctoral School of Institutes of Polish Academy of Sciences.

IV. Requirements:

  • a master's degree in chemistry or physics or materials science,
  • scientific interests in the field of solid state physical chemistry,
  • experience in experimental work (supported by bachelor's, master's, research) in synthesis, diffraction or/and spectroscopic methods are well seen,
  • high average student grades,
  • enthusiasm, motivation for scientific work, independence, ability to work in a team, creativity, high personal culture,
  • good written and spoken English,
  • eligibility for PhD studies in Poland.
