The Wrocław Doctoral School of Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences (WDS IPAS) announces a special recruitment process for a PhD student-fellow in the research project titled “Understanding the function of the DTX3L ubiquitin ligase in antiviral responses induced by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)”, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN, Grant No. UMO-2024/53/B/NZ3/03865). The project will be conducted in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunobiology of Tumors at the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Wrocław.

We offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and collaborative team focusing on experimental therapies.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT:
The project aims to elucidate the role of the DTX3L ubiquitin ligase in signaling pathways activated by PRRs during viral infections. To date, DTX3L has been primarily studied in the context of DNA damage response and its presence in various cancers. However, recent literature suggests a potential role for DTX3L in regulating antiviral immune responses. Our preliminary data indicate that DTX3L-deficient cells infected with influenza B virus exhibit increased production of type I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines compared to cells with normal DTX3L expression. It appears that DTX3L prevents excessive activation of antiviral responses.

Deciphering the molecular mechanisms by which DTX3L influences antiviral immune signaling will improve our understanding of immune signal transduction. Furthermore, identifying DTX3L-regulated factors involved in type I IFN response may pave the way for new antiviral therapeutic strategies. We hypothesize that modulating DTX3L levels or activity could enhance endogenous IFNβ production, potentially leading to novel immunomodulatory therapies independent of exogenous recombinant administration.

WHAT WE OFFER YOU:

  • opportunity to acquire a broad range of new skills and develop independent research ideas
  • support for professional development through internal and external training as well as personalized mentoring
  • development opportunities via collaboration with other research centers
  • PhD scholarship (funded by NCN and IITD PAN) for 4 years
