The Wrocław Doctoral School of Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences announces a special recruitment for a doctoral student and a scholarship holder in the research project entitled „Functions of Amotl2 protein in the central nervous system", commissioned by the National Science Center (grant no. 2022/45/B/NZ3/03688) at the Synaptogenesis Research Group at the Łukasiewicz Research Network PORT – Polish Center for Technology Development in Wrocław.
We offer work in a specialized research laboratory that allows you to obtain a doctorate in biological or medical sciences.
Description of the research project
The research and doctoral thesis will be carried out as part of the research project: “Functions of Amotl2 protein in the central nervous system”, commissioned by the National Science Center (grant no. 2022/45/B/NZ3/03688).
A summary of the project:
The project aims to understand the function of the Amotl2 protein in the central nervous system. AMOTL2 belongs to a family of proteins called Angiomitins, which contains three closely related proteins: Angiomitin (Amot), Angiomitin-1-like protein (Amotl1), and Angiomiotin-2-like protein (Amotl2). The role of Angiomiotins in the CNS is poorly understood so far. Recently, two publications have been published on the function of the Amot protein in the brain. Wigerius et al. JCB (2018) showed that Amot determines the proper development of synapses by regulating actin in dendritic spines. However, research from our laboratory has demonstrated that the Amot protein is also involved in the proper formation of the dendritic tree in cultured hippocampal neurons and Purkinje cells in vivo (Rojek et al. Plos Biology 2019). Current research has shown that the Amotl1 protein plays an important role in brain organization and influences mouse behavior. Animals with deletion of the Amotl1 gene exhibit behavioral abnormalities characteristic of mouse models of schizophrenia (unpublished results). Bearing that Amot and Amotl1 are important proteins that regulate neurons in the brain, the upcoming project, in which the recruited person will work, aims to investigate the function of the third protein in the Angiomotin family, namely Amotl2. This protein is closely related to Amot and Amotl1, and our preliminary results strongly suggest that it also plays important functions in neurons. So far, there is no publications role of Amotl2 in the central nervous system; therefore, the proposed project is innovative and likely will significantly contribute to the development of knowledge in neuroscience.
Conditions to be met by the Candidate:
- Only a person who does not hold a doctoral degree and is not a doctoral school participant may enter the competition;
- The competition may be entered by a person who obtains a master's degree in biology, biotechnology or other related before 24.02.2023.
- A person with knowledge of molecular biology and neuroscience is welcome.
Criteria and method of assessing Candidates:
During the recruitment process, the Candidate will be assessed in accordance with the criteria for recruitment to the Doctoral School and in the scope enabling the award of the NCN scholarship, taking into account the overall assessment of the Candidate's suitability for the implementation of the tasks provided for in the research project entitled "Functions of Amotl2 protein in the central nervous system".
Doctoral student's duties:
- planning experiments and analysis of the obtained results
- analysis of protein and mRNA expression levels
- analysis of interactions between proteins
- studies on synaptic protein localization
- analysis of neuronal morphology
- cooperation in preparation of scientific figures.
Scholarship:
A doctoral student will receive a doctoral scholarship from the National Science Center on the basis of the Act of 20 July 2018 Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, as amended) and on the basis of the Regulations on awarding funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the field of research projects, annexed to the Resolution of the Council of the National Science Center No. 49/2020 of April 29, 2020 on amending the Regulations on awarding funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the field of research projects and the Regulations on awarding research scholarships in research projects financed by the National Science Center of March 14, 2019.
The approximate amount of the doctoral scholarship determined in accordance with Art. 209 paragraph. 1 of the Act of July 20, 2018 (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, as amended) will currently amount to:
a) PLN 2 667,7 zl per month (gross) until the month in which the mid-term evaluation of the doctoral student at the doctoral school will be carried out,
b) PLN 4 109,7 zl monthly (gross) after the month in which the mid-term evaluation of the doctoral student at the doctoral school was conducted.
The doctoral scholarship will be paid after all components are deducted, in accordance with applicable regulations. In particular, the funds allocated to the doctoral scholarship will cover the costs of compulsory social insurance and, upon request, the costs of sickness insurance.
If, during the recruitment process, the candidate also meets the conditions for granting scholarships, as set out in the above-mentioned Regulations, he/she will receive an additional benefit in the form of an NCN research scholarship - each time in the amount remaining after deducting the total costs of the doctoral scholarship settled in the Project from the monthly budget for the remuneration of the PhD student (according to the in the Draft budget for this purpose in the total amount of PLN 240,000 zl gross).
The approximate amount of the scholarship will be PLN 2 332,3 zl per month (gross) for 24 months (before mid-term evaluation) and 890,3 zl per month (gross) for 24 months (after mid-term evaluation).
The scholarship will be paid on the basis of the agreement and the Regulations for granting scholarships referred to above.
