Quantum Dots - Nobel Prize 2023
prof. dr hab. inż. Artur Podhorodecki
Katedra Fizyki Doświadczalnej, Wydział Podstawowych Problemów Techniki, Politechnika Wrocławska
In 2023, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three authors for developing a method for the synthesis of semiconductor, colloidal quantum dots. In my speech, I will present the profiles of the authors of this award and discuss the basic differences between colloidal quantum dots and epitaxial quantum dots, as well as discuss selected features of colloidal quantum dots that are not discussed when discussing the properties of epitaxial quantum dots.
In the second part of my speech, I will try to answer the question: why such an important prize was awarded to a seemingly uncomplicated synthesis method that allows obtaining small semiconducting crystals. In this discussion, I will present the challenges faced by this type of synthesis methods and the application potential, supported by commercial examples, for colloidal quantum dots.
