Effective interactions induced by non-equilibrium environment

When two or more probe particles are immersed in a non-equilibrium fluid containing driven or active colloids, they experience an effective mutual interaction with strikingly different properties than in the case of equilibrium fluid. Indeed, instead of conservative and typically short-range interactions obeying the action-reaction principle, we now observe effective non-potential forces with long-range features and often breaking the action-reaction. We analyze these properties within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, assuming the probes to be much slower and locally interacting with fast driven colloids diffusively moving in 1D ring. We consider two specific driving scenarios: (1) a constant driving force along the ring, and (2) periodic-time dependent forces. For both models we (quasi-)explicitly calculate the effective non-equilibrium interactions and identify their relevant length scales. We argue that within a multi-probe scenario the induced interaction forces can stabilize certain mesoscopic equidistant patterns which are not stable under equilibrium conditions.
